Champion Home Health Care, Brevard County’s premier home health care agency, continues to celebrate seniors at the close of Healthy Aging Month 2017. Do you have a senior in your life who deserves celebrating? Are there people close to you who are over the age of 65? If so, you have reason to celebrate too. There is no time like the present to set aside a few moments to let those older adults in your life know how much they mean to you. Sit with them and ask about their lives. Find out what means the most to them and share why they mean so very much to you. Champion Home Health Care has the privilege and honor of serving seniors throughout Brevard with the best in-home health care and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
As the month comes to a close, we’d like to share with you one important thing you can do for yourself or an elderly person in your life that could make an incredible impact on the aging process. We all want to live well for as long as we possibly can and part of that includes staying on top of any vision issues. In fact, the National Eye Institute, a part of the National Institutes of Health, has come alongside Healthy Aging Month to encourage seniors to take care of their vision.
There are many vision-related issues that come with age such as needing extra light to see or losing focus. However, there are symptoms that are not normal and sometimes the only way to catch the underlying condition is through a comprehensive dilated eye exam, which they encourage everyone to do. If you notice anything off, schedule an appointment to have your eyes checked. If you are wondering what you can do now for yourself or someone you love, apart from scheduling your eye exam, check out these tips from the NEI.
Eat Smart
A diet rich in nutrients and Omega-3s is important for your eye health. Eating well also helps keep your weight down which, in turn, decreases your chances of developing comorbid conditions like diabetes.
Know Your Health History
Be sure you know your health history along with that of your family members. According to the Cleveland Clinic, there is strong research that suggests a genetic link for glaucoma and macular degeneration. Knowing your family history can help you stay on top of any changes in your vision.
You should also be aware if you have any chronic illnesses or diseases that could cause vision problems.
Be Sun Safe
Here in Melbourne, FL, we all know how important it is to protect our eyes. When you are outside, cover them with protective glasses and throw on a hat for good measure.
